Proper Disposal of Sharps

Sharps recently found next the trash dumpsters at the Lebanon Solid Waste Facility

Sharps is a term used for medical devices with sharp pointed edges that can cut or puncture your skin (safeneedledisposal.org).  Sharps are used by many to manage ongoing health needs such as diabetes, allergies, cancer, and other health conditions. Sharps are used at home, at work, on vacation, and for our pets.

With sharps becoming so commonplace, proper disposal needs to be considered. There are a variety of options available for proper sharps disposal.

Here are a few to think about:

• The Lebanon Solid Waste Facility accepts household generated sharps for disposal. Place used sharps in a RIGID plastic container (laundry detergent bottle). Be sure to label the container “Contains Sharps NOT for Recycling”. Tape the cap shut with duct tape.

Container properly marked for sharps disposal• The Lebanon Police Department has partnered with Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital to offer a Sharps Disposal Container in the lobby of the Lebanon Police headquarters. The container is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Anyone seeking to dispose of used and unwanted needles can stop in and dispose of the needles anonymously with no questions asked.

• Use a mail-in disposal package

• Needle clippers are FDA approved for sharps disposal.

• Talk with your prescribing doctor about sharps disposal options for you.

• Visit safeneedledisposal.org for more information on disposal options.

Never…

  • DO NOT throw sharps straight into the trash
  • DO NOT discard sharps where they could injure someone
  • DO NOT store them in soft plastic bottles (water bottles), glass jars or metal containers
  • DO NOT place sharps in recycling bins
