On Thursday February 22, 2018 at approximately 10:15AM, Corporal Michael Roberts was investigating a suspicious vehicle, containing two male subjects, parked at Walmart on Plainfield Road in the parking lot on the north side of the building. The male passenger provided a false name and as Cpl. Roberts continued to investigate, he discovered that the subject was in possession of drug paraphernalia. The male was later positively identified as Shawn M. Mooney, age 30, last known to be living in Stoddard, New Hampshire. As Cpl. Roberts attempted to arrest Mooney, Mooney attacked him by striking him in the face several times and then made several attempts to gouge out one of his eyes. Mooney was able to get away from Cpl. Roberts and fled into a swamp located behind Walmart.
Cpl. Roberts had radioed for assistance, which brought multiple Lebanon Police Officers to the area. Mooney was located on Interchange Drive, attempting to exit the other side of the swamp, where he was taken into custody. Mooney’s identity was confirmed after he was arrested and it was determined that he has outstanding arrest warrants charging him with Aggravated Felonious Sexual Assault involving a 9-year-old child and Violation of Probation, both from the Hillsborough County Superior Court North. Mooney is facing the following charges from this morning’s incident in Lebanon: three counts of Attempted First Degree Assault, Class A Felony; Simple Assault, Reckless Conduct and Resisting Arrest, all Class A Misdemeanors. The First-Degree Assault and Reckless Conduct charges stem from Mooney’s attempts to gouge out Cpl. Roberts’ eye.
Agents from the United States Marshal Service had been in Lebanon in early January attempting to locate Mooney on the outstanding warrants. They had information that Mooney was hiding out in the Lebanon area. The investigation into this incident, and the harboring of Mooney, is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lebanon Police Department at 603-448-1212.
Cpl. Roberts was examined at the scene and later treated and released from Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital for facial and eye injuries. Mooney was transported to DHMC where he is being evaluated. Bail is pending and Mooney is expected to be arraigned tomorrow in the Grafton County Superior Court.
