Holocaust Remembrance Day is an annual observance to remember and honor the genocide of European Jews by the Nazi regime and its allies during World War II. About two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population was exterminated during the Holocaust. Additionally, another million individuals including gypsies, physically and mentally disabled, resistance fighters, and others considered a threat to the German idea of race purity were also murdered.
As the numbers of hate crimes including anti-semitism have increased exponentially it is important to remember the Holocaust as it helps teach the dangers of unchecked hatred often a result of manipulation by individuals with power. Holocaust Remembrance Day gives us an opportunity to confront hatred, prevent mass genocide and promote human dignity. It is an opportunity to teach and remember so apathy and disinterest do not allow hatred to flourish. Please mark your calendar for April 28, 2022, to remember all those lives lost.
