Sandwich Board Sign Regulations

The City of Lebanon Zoning Ordinance permits a limited number of sandwich board signs in all commercial zoning districts. A zoning permit is not required; however, the following standards must be met.Your cooperation in helping to keep Lebanon a visually beautiful and safe place to live, work, shop and play is greatly appreciated.

608.5 Temporary Signs


The following temporary signs are permitted in those districts indicated below, without a zoning permit and shall not be located in a public right-of-way except as provided for in Chapter 152, Section 34 F of the City of Lebanon Code. (*please see below for more on Chapter 152).

G. On-premise sandwich board signs not exceeding three and one-half (3.5) feet in height or seven (7) square feet in area are permitted in CBD, GC, L-Ind, I-RA, NC and MC zones, subject to the following limitations: 

  1. The sign shall not be located within a street or street right-of -way, except that where sidewalks exist, such a sign may be located on a public sidewalk. The sign shall not obstruct pedestrian traffic. If located on a public or private sidewalk, it shall be placed either adjacent to the curb or adjacent to the building so as to allow a 36-inch minimum walkway. 
  2. The sign shall not obstruct visibility of vehicles or pedestrians. 
  3. Only one such sign shall be allowed per lot or parcel, except for multi-tenant buildings and shopping centers, where not more than three such signs shall be displayed at any one time, and only during the hours that the business is open. It shall be the sole responsibility of the building or shopping center owner to: a.) allow the use of such signs; and b.) regulate and monitor said use in conformance with these standards.

Chapter 152-32 & 34 of the City of Lebanon Code prohibits the placement or display of any sign within or upon the right-of-way of any City Street. The following exceptions are allowed:

Political advertising in accordance with RSA 664:14-17


Sandwich Board signs permitted under Section 608.5 (G) of the Zoning Ordinance which are located on public sidewalks (see above Zoning Ordinance sandwich board sign standards).
Yard sale signs in compliance with Section 207 of the Zoning Ordinance, with limitations as to number, size and placement of signs (please contact us for more information).
Temporary directional signs advertising residential property for sale and located in the public right-of-way, with limitations as to the number, size and placement of signs (please contact us for more information).
